Scientific research
The Institute conducts research in the laboratory, pilot industrial and industrial conditions in the following areas:
- the study of solid fuels;
- coke production;
- production of carbon materials;
- coal gasification;
- production of chemical products based on the processing of combustible minerals;
- environmental protection of coke-chemical and other enterprises of processing of combustible minerals;
- production of innovative carbon products from coal.
UKHIN was established on July 4, 1930.
According to the order of the State Committee of Ukraine on Technical Regulation and Consumer Policy No. 93 dated March 14, 2011, SE "UKHIN" performs the functions of the secretariat of the Technical Committee for Standardization 12 "Coke" (TC 12), whose fields of activity (objects of standardization) include coke products (solid fuel) and chemical products of coking (including liquid fuel and road-building materials) as well as physicochemical methods for analyzing these products.
SE "UKHIN" is accredited by the NATIONAL ACCREDITATION AGENCY OF UKRAINE in accordance with the requirements:
- DSTU EN ISO/IEC 17025: 2019 in the field of testing brown, hard and wood coal, anthracite, coal coke, petroleum and vegetable fuels, chemical products of coal coking.
Accreditation Certificate No. 20728, registered in the Register on September 5, 2024.
- ISO/IEC 17043: 2023 as a provider of proficiency testing programs of laboratories in the field of testing brown coal, hard coal, anthracite, enriched charge, coke products (blast furnace coke, foundry coke, coal coke, coke nuts, coke fines).

Works with the participation of the State Enterprise "Ukhin" were awarded to:
State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology:
- «Integrated energy-saving technology for the production of high-quality metallurgical coke at JSC ALCHEVSKKOKS», 2009 (Doctor of Technical Sciences Kovalev Yevgeny Tikhonovich, Ph.D. in Technical Science Kuznichenko Vyacheslav Mikhailovich);
- «Resource-saving technologies of metallurgical production based on the use of Ukrainian coal», 2012 (Ph.D. Igor Shulga).
Prizes of the President of Ukraine for young scientists:
- «Development of methods for modifying the properties of coal charge and the creation of optimal operating conditions for coke ovens to produce high-quality coke», 2015 (Ph.D., Zelensky Oleg Ivanovich, Ph.D., Sytnik Alexander Vladimirovich).

For over 95 years, the SE "UKHIN" has been providing scientific and technological support to all operating Ukrainian enterprises of the mining and metallurgical complex. Our activities cover almost the entire territory of Ukraine - from the Lviv-Volyn to the Donetsk coal basins. Among our regular customers are the flagships of domestic metallurgy PJSC "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih", PJSC "Zaporizhstal", PrJSC "KAMET-STAL", coal mining enterprises PrJSC "DTEK PAVLOGRADVUGOLYA", "Subsidiary Enterprise "Si-Si-Ai-Lyubel" and others. But our activities are not limited to metallurgy and large (traditional) energy.
In addition to the above, thanks to decades of experience, a unique set of research equipment, and the only team of highly qualified specialists in Ukraine, the institute has the right and the ability to:
- determine the characteristic quality indicators of almost all types of fuel - coal (hard, brown, wood), peat and other solid fuels; agricultural waste (chips, straw, sunflower husks and cake, etc.); alternative liquid fuels to replace oil fuels - with the issuance of relevant certificates, in particular regarding the material's belonging to alternative fuels, and with recommendations for optimal use;
- issue the quality certificates for excisable coke chemical products, in particular - crude benzene, etc.;
- verify and confirm the competence of laboratories and research centers with the issue of relevant certificates;
- carry out research on determination the maximum permissible concentrations of chemicals in the air of the working area and in the aquatic environment and to develop measurement methods for their control in accordance with the requirements of the sanitary legislation of Ukraine.
In addition, we provide scientific and technological services for the research of:
- solid household and industrial organic waste (varieties of plastics, rubber, etc.) from the point of view of the possibility of their thermal utilization with the production of promising products (including experimental pyrolysis, compiling of a material balance and analyzing all products);
- solid reducing agents for furnaces for calcination, sugar refineries, etc.;
- carbon content in raw materials, semi-finished products and products for various industries;
- composition of metals and alloys for a wide range of customers;
- corrosion rates of various metals in various industrial and other environments and under various conditions.

1. Conducting theoretical, applied and experimental research in laboratory, bench, test-output and industrial conditions in the following area:
- the study of solid fossil fuels in terms of the appropriateness of their use in various areas of the national economy;
- cokemaking;
- production of carbonaceous materials;
- coal gasification;
- reception of chemical products on the basis of processing of fossil fuels;
- processing of fossil fuels by physical and chemical methods;
- environment protection of the of coke-chemical and other enterprises processing fossil fuels;
- development, improvement, certification of new and existing methods of analysis and control of technological processes for processing fossil fuels and final products;
- development and production of standard samples;
- the inventory of harmful substances emissions into the atmosphere, recommendations for their reduction and destruction;
- the development of draft standards for maximum permissible emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere and assessment of their impact on the natural environment;
- development, improvement, certification of new and existing methods of analysis and control of technological processes for processing fossil fuels and final products;
- standardization, certification and metrology of coking and other types of coal processing.
2. Manufacturing of pilot plants, testing of equipment, introduction and testing at the enterprises created by the Institute of technological processes.
3. Carrying out of scientific, scientific and technical expertise on: ing at the enterprises created by the Institute of technological processes:
- quality, properties and areas of using of coke and energy coal, anthracites, and also products of their enrichment;
- quality and properties of semi-coke and all types of coke products;
- quality and properties of chemical coking products;
- quality and properties of products for processing fuels and lubricants;
